The Rules of this Contest

Listed below are extracts from the rules of this competition. These extracts detail the rights being claimed from entrants.

By entering this contest -

"BJP and the AOP reserve the right to display, reproduce and publish in any media, any entry, without payment, for the sole purpose of the BJP International Photography Award and exhibition - this year and for five years - and its promotion and publicity. In other words, we may use entries to promote and publicise the contest (this year and for five years), but we will not use images for any other purpose. No copyright is transferred to the BJP or AOP in respect of any works entered or accepted. All images will be credited to their copyright owners when used to promote the BJP International Photography Award and exhibition. Each entrant shall be deemed to warrant that they own the entire copyright in the work or that they have permission from the licensee and/or copyright owner/s for the uses and that all necessary model releases and clearances have been obtained."

This contest meets every requirement of the The Bill of Rights.

This competition meets all the standards set out in

the Bill of Rights For Artists

  • claim copyright
  • seek waiving of moral rights
  • fail to give a credit for all free usage
  • add, alter, or remove metadata from the works
  • seek usage rights other than for solely and exclusively promoting the contest. Note that a book, posters, cards, or a calendar are seen as legitimate ways of promoting the contest and defraying costs
  • seek free usage rights in excess of 3 years
  • use the works commercially without the creators agreement, and such commercial usage is to be rights managed and limited to 3 years.
  • make it a condition of winning that an entrant must sign a commercial usage agreement
  • fail to publish all documents on the competition website that an entrant may have to sign
  • fail to name the judges for this or last year's competition
  • fail to explicitly state all the organisations who will acquire rights to the works
  • set a closing date more than 18 months after the contest launch date
  • fail to make clear statements of rights claimed and how the works are used
