The Rules of this Contest
Before quoting the competition rules it may be of interest to explain what the United Kingdom Crown Estate is. Here is an extract from the Crown Estate website which explain their role within the United Kingdom.
"The Crown Estate may be traced back to the reign of King Edward the Confessor and, until the accession of King George III, the Sovereign received its rents, profits and expenses. However since 1760, the annual surplus, after deducting management costs, has been surrendered by the Sovereign to Parliament to help meet the costs of civil government. In return, the Sovereign receives the civil list and the Government meets other official expenditure incurred in support of the Sovereign."
Listed below are extracts from the rules of this competition. These extracts detail the rights being claimed from entrants.
"1. Copyright
In contributing to RegentStreetOnline.com you agree to grant The Crown Estate (the owner and operator of the website) an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use or display your attached photo in connection with and in relation to the Regent Street Festival 2008 ("the Festival") and any related photograph competition until the end of 2009 ("the Competition") including, but not limited to, publicising and promoting the Festival and Competition, and the printed production of your photographs for display purposes and the transmission of the material by The Crown Estate ("the Licence").
It's important to note that YOU still own the copyright to everything you contribute to RegentStreetOnline.com. If your photo is used for promotional purposes, you will be credited for the use of your image by The Crown Estate on this website (regentstreetonline.com)
The Crown Estate cannot guarantee that all photos will be used and we reserve the right to edit the photo's title and caption if it is viewed as unsuitable. All images will be checked by a moderator; upon upload an email will be sent to verify that you are the owner of the email address linked to the image used for submission. At this stage, if you want to remove your photo, please respond to the email.
The Crown Estate may need to contact you for administrative or verification purposes in relation to your contribution.
You have the right to request the removal of your photo at any stage. Please email us in order to do so.
"4. Judging
The competition will be judged Annie Walker, Director of the Regent Street Association and David Shaw, Head of Regent Street Strategy and Development."

Complies with the Bill of Rights
This competition meets all the standards set out in
the Bill of Rights For Artists
Competitions which comply with the conditions set out in the Bill of Rights For Artists do not -
- claim copyright
- seek waiving of moral rights
- fail to give a credit for all free usage
- add, alter, or remove metadata from the works
- seek usage rights other than for solely and exclusively promoting the contest. Note that a book, posters, cards, or a calendar are seen as legitimate ways of promoting the contest and defraying costs
- seek free usage rights in excess of 3 years
- use the works commercially without the creators agreement, and such commercial usage is to be rights managed and limited to 3 years.
- make it a condition of winning that an entrant must sign a commercial usage agreement
- fail to publish all documents on the competition website that an entrant may have to sign
- fail to name the judges for this or last year's competition
- fail to explicitly state all the organisations who will acquire rights to the works
- set a closing date more than 18 months after the contest launch date
- fail to make clear statements of rights claimed and how the works are used
